Aush paddy harvesting has been completed, exceeding its fixed target in all seven upazilas of the district during the current season, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said today.
The DAE sources said they had set a target of cultivating Aush on 4,515 hectares of land, with a production target of 14,456 metric tons of clean rice. But Aush was cultivated on 4,669 hectares of land, producing 15,838 metric tons of rice, which was 1,382 metric tons more than the target.
Aush cultivator Ali Hossain of Krishnapur village under Krishnapur Union of Manikganj Sadar Upazila said the timely supply of quality seeds and fertilizers and monitoring by DAE officials were the main causes of exceeding the cultivation and harvesting targets.
Md Dabir Uddin, another Aush cultivator of Baghutia village under Daulatpur upazila, said, "After harvesting Boro, we cultivate Aush in the fallow land and it is considered an extra crop. But now it's considered our fortune," adding that most cultivators are becoming interested in Aush cultivation.
DAE Deputy Director Mohammad Shajahan Seraj said the timely supply of quality seeds and other agricultural inputs was the cause of the expansion of Aush paddy cultivation in the district. Day by day, cultivators are becoming interested in Aush cultivation in the district, the Deputy Director added.
