Hamidur Rahman (42) of Satkuri village on the Hili border of Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur district has successfully cultivated cumin on his own 300 acres of land experimentally. Hakimpur Upazila Agriculture Officer of Dinajpur, Ms. Arzina Begum, confirmed this information.
Arzina Begum said that farmer Hamidur Rahman, a successful entrepreneur in cumin cultivation, has succeeded in cultivating cumin on a small scale on his 300 acres of land using modern methods in agriculture. The farmer collected cumin seeds online and cultivated cumin for the first time, and got a good yield. He produced about 5 kg of cumin by cultivating cumin on just 300 acres of land. This successful cumin cultivation of his is creating interest in cumin cultivation among the young and young farmers of the area.
Farmer Hamidur Rahman said, I have started cultivating cumin seeds online. Cumin has never been cultivated in our area before. For the first time, I have cultivated cumin on 300 acres of land on my own initiative and got a good yield. The cumin produced on my land is of high quality and fragrant.
He said, " The aroma of cumin I produce is much better than the cumin in the market. This has given me more encouragement. I hope to cultivate cumin on more land in the future.
Local Union Parishad member Md. Rafiqul Islam said, " This is the first time I have seen cumin cultivation in our area. The cumin plants produced are very good, and the yield is observed to be of excellent quality. It is impossible to imagine that cumin cultivation is possible in our soil like this. I myself will cultivate cumin in my land in the future.
He said, " The cost is relatively low. It also takes less time to get the yield. It can be profitable for us.
Rafiqul Islam said that currently, cumin imported from India is being sold at a price of 600 to 700 taka per kg in the Hili market. Compared to that of cumin, the quality of cumin produced by farmer Hamidur Rahman is much better.
Hakimpur Municipality BNP General Secretary Sakhawat Hossain Shilpi said, starting cultivation of new crops by collecting seeds online is a truly commendable initiative. As cumin cultivation has been successful in this border region, other farmers are also getting interested. I hope the Agriculture Department will take initiatives in this regard so that cumin can be cultivated in the country in the future as well to meet the country's demand.
Dinajpur District Agriculture Extension Department Deputy Director, Md. Afzal Hossain said that this yield has been possible due to the collection of high-quality seeds and proper care. In the future, regular advice has been given to farmers on cumin cultivation in our country's soil. He expressed the opinion that if the cultivation of such spice crops increases, new possibilities will be created in the area.
