Different varieties of fragrant rice are being sold at record prices in the domestic market. In the past one month, the price has increased by 60 to 80 taka per kg depending on the quality. Traders claim that the increase in exports has put pressure on the supply in the local market, which has affected the price.

A visit to various markets in the capital showed that the price of open polawa rice has increased significantly compared to a few months ago. Rice, which was previously sold for 160 taka per kg, is now being sold for 170 to 200 taka depending on the quality. On the other hand, the price of packaged fragrant rice remains at around 210 taka per kg as before.

According to retailers, the increase in the export of fragrant rice has created a certain crisis in the local market. As a result, prices have started increasing from the wholesale level.

Wholesale traders said that exports have increased due to the increase in demand for Chinigura rice, especially among expatriates. They also allege that some unscrupulous traders are illegally hoarding rice.

In this regard, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) President AHM Shafiquzzaman said, there is no real crisis of rice in the market. He believes that some traders are creating an artificial crisis in the hope of additional profits and increasing the price.

According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), a total of 23,959 tons of fragrant rice have been approved for export in two phases in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
